The Western Wood Products Association is the trade organization which establishes grading rules and applies grade stamps to the lumber you use. Almost all producers in the 12 Western States, from the Canadian border south to Mexico and from the Black Hills to the West Coast, belong to this group. If you are interested in where the trees your lumber comes from are grown, how the lumber is manufactured and graded, and how to design with lumber, this is a great site, full of vital information.

The Structural Board Association was founded in Canada in 1976. The SBA represents more than 30 Oriented Strand Board (OSB) mills around the world. These mills produce the equivalent of 300 million 4 x 8 panels annually. This site is also a great source of technical information and news about the OSB industry. Since OSB comprises more than half of the sheathing sold in our market, this can be a vital resource when it comes to educating local code officials and/or architects.

The National Wood Window and Door Association represents over 130 manufactures of wood windows and doors in the United States and Canada. Their site contains a directory of members, design information, articles and links to other sites. (Links are often as important as the host site, since they can aid you in finding specific information about related items.)

Hanley-Wood, Inc. publishes several industry specific magazines. They make much of the contents of these magazines available on the web. If you want to skip their homesite and go directly to one of these publications, here are their internet addresses:
- BUILDER: www.builderonline.com
- REMODELING: www.remodeling.hw.net
- OLD-HOUSE JOURNAL: www.oldhousejournal.com
- RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECT: www.residentialarchitect.com
- TOOLS OF THE TRADE: www.toolsofthetrade.net
- HOME PLAN DESIGNS: www.homeplandesigns.com
- HOME PLANNERS: www.homeplanners.com
As you might expect, all of these magazines contain links to several manufacturers. There is a healthy mix of blatant advertising and useful information (like any magazine). The neat thing about accessing all this on the net is that it doesn't sit around the house waiting to be recycled after you have read it. One click of the mouse and it is gone! Happy surfing, and please add www.HinesLumber.com to your bookmarks!
